I'm Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee...
I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee, won't my mommy be so proud of me!
After 77 days in the hospital, we were able to bring Evey home on August 19th!
God is Good! We were told earlier in the week that we would not be able to pick her up until Monday, August 21st. When we went to visit Evey on Saturday, we got there before rounds. Holly was her nurse that day. We loved Holly because she always took good care of her either during the day or night. When they did rounds, the cardiologist that first saw Evey after she was born was on the team. They went through all of her stats and at the end, we asked if we were still on track to pick her up on Monday. The doctor looked at the team and said, " I don't see why she couldn't get discharged today!" So of course we were like YES! We had the kids with us and they were troopers hanging out at the hospital from 9am until 4pm!
Thankfully, Evey was able to see her BFF before leaving the hospital! It was a great moment and I'm super thankful for the friendship we have formed! She checks on her every so often which I love!
Durham has a fancy Super Target, so while Evey was doing the carseat test, Joshua took the boys to Target to pick up some baby things that we had not yet bought... baby soap, car seat toy, thermometer, etc. It was a fun adventure for them and both Jonah and Laney were so excited to hear that she could be home, they did everything to keep busy that day!
We are getting use to oxygen cords, feeding tubes and all the appointments she has for the next month. It seems like each week she has 2-3 appointments! The kids have been super good at changing their clothes and washing their hands before playing with Evey. Our top priority is to keep everyone healthy as school starts back up.
She is a great baby! She loves to follow her brothers and sister around the room. They love talking with her and seeing her every morning! Laney loves picking her outfit out every morning and then seeing her in a different outfit when she gets home because she has pooped through 2-3 outfits during the day.
We are working on getting her to take a bottle. So far we have tried Avent, Mam and Dr. Brown. We are also set up to get home health therapies at the beginning of October. She will start at Gateway Education Center on September 19th. We are praying her cardiologist and audiologist appointment goes well. She did not pass the hearing test twice at the hospital so she will need to get a diagnostic test completed. Her primary doctor told us that a lot of babies with down syndrome have narrow ear canals so as along as we feel she can hear, it shouldn't be an issue with her passing the diagnostic test.
We saw a new pediatrician for her and we loved how she empathized with us. She also has a daughter that had a congenital heart defect, so she was able to reassure us everything will be much better after she gets surgery. She also said that it will be a lot for us stress wise when open heart surgery is set. She gave us all the information we needed to help with that process.
Everyone is so happy she is home. She is now 8 lbs 2 ounces. She loves to sleep and be held. It's a new normal for us and we have had our moments of, "I can't do this" or "How are we going to do this?" but we have reminded each other that with every baby we have brought home we find our groove. We will have lots more to do with Evey and things will have to be different for a little while but once we get through open heart surgery, Evey will be like a new baby and she will have more energy to learn and grow.
Prayer requests: Evey's hearing will be ok, she will begin to take a bottle, transition to childcare and going back to work on September 19th will be smooth and that we as a whole family continue to give each other grace and patience as we work through the small obstacles that come our way as we make sure Evey gets the best care!
We will update the blog every so often so that everyone can see and learn about the progress she has made as she goes through heart surgery and beyond.
Be like a Bee- hardworking, wise and delicate!
